Happy New Year Friends!

I hope you each had a wonderful holiday season. Did you make any resolutions for 2012?

Last year I resolved to MAKE each day a good day....even when it's not. For the most part I was able to do just that. Although, the last few months of the year were challenging and full of very high ups and very low downs.

I welcome a new year and the possibilities it will offer. Yes, like 2011 there will be highs and lows….curves and bumps…achievements and challenges, but that is what life is all about. Without the tough times, would we truly appreciate the joys life offers?

We tend to take our blessings for granted until our eyes are opened by a wake-up call. So in the spirit of the season, I intend to build on the positive initiated by my personal Make it a Great Day campaign by Greeting Each Day with Gratitude in 2012 and I hope you will join me.

This Christmas, I joined a fantastic group of bloggers in a Secret Santa gift exchange. Oh what fun it was to peek in and get to know a new blogger and try to figure out what she may like.

I received my care package while my Dad was in the hospital and my spirits were pretty low. Although my Secret Santa has remained anonymous, I want her to know just how much my mood was lifted by her generosity and thoughtfulness.

Update: A Different Kind of Christmas

Hello Friends.

I hope you are all enjoying your pre-holiday festivities. Christmas is going to be different for our family this year.

As many of you know, my 87 year-old father underwent back surgery earlier in the month at a Columbus hospital. If you or anyone you know has had lower back surgery, you know the road to recovery is long and arduous.

The anesthesia and pain meds left my dad very confused and, at times, combative. Thankfully, most of that has since worn off.

Monday, we were able to move him to a rehab center in Marion, where we live. He seemed very comfortable there and everyone relaxed a bit.

Wednesday was perhaps the most peculiar day of my life. I received a call, while I was driving to work, from the nurse at the center saying they were rushing Dad to the local ER because his breathing had become labored. I turned around to head back to Marion and started trying to contact my brothers. No one answered their phones so I finally called my nephew, who is a police detective and used to getting calls in the night.

When I got to the hospital BJ and Jordan were there, but the ambulance was not. Jordan offered to drive to my oldest brother's house to awake him. When he returned he said something is wrong with Uncle Chuck. He is bloated and can't talk right.

I called him and his speech was slurred. I asked him if he was ok and told him he should come out to be checked.

Before he could get there, some family friends came into the ER. Their children were driving to school and the car was struck by a truck.

Dad had sustained a small heart attack and was in congestive heart failure. He was admitted to ICU for observation.

Chuck's kidneys were not functioning correctly due to a change in medication. He was admitted to the hospital in a room just outside of the ICU.

The children who were in the accident are fine. They are very sore and shaken up, but are home recuperating.

Needless to say, Christmas will be different this year. There will be no cookies, no big family celebration, no day of playing. It is disappointing, but we are very thankful that everyone is healing.

I would like to thank my Secret Santa for all the wonderful treats she sent me. As soon as life settles a bit, I will share my box of goodies with all of you.

It's a Girl!

Bosco has been an only pet for 8 years. He is sweet, loving, and spoiled. He lives blissfully at the center of our household.

For many months, I wanted to introduce a little brother or sister to his world. I always thought he or she would be of the canine variety, but you may recall Bosco suffers from Cynophobia.

Cynophobia: (sī’-nə-fō’-bē-a) Noun. A morbid fear of dogs.

The Cynophobia results from Bosco’s harrowing encounter with my brother and sister-in-law’s Golden Retriever, Lola. She was excited to see him and jumped on his little head. Since then, he has been afraid of all dogs, including puppies.

Last week I went on Petfinder and found the Purrrfect little sister for Bosco. She was located at our local humane society. Ashlee called to see if she was still available and we were pleased to find that she was. The director at the Marion Area Humane Society suggested we bring Bosco out to see whether they would get along.

That evening we took Bosco to meet her. They immediately became buddies and she came home with us that night. Without further ado, please meet Nubs, formerly known as Cinders.

Why Nubs? This beautiful little kitten has no tail…to speak of. There is a little nub about 2 inches long. Thankfully, her lack of tail is not due to abuse; she was born with a bobtail. Apparently, she came to the shelter as part of a litter in April and all her siblings had normal tails. She was the last of the litter to be adopted. I guess most people don’t want a cat without a long tail.

When people ask me where we got her, I tell them I got her from the Island of Misfit Toys. We love her and she is very happy, which is evident when she wags her little bobtail like a dog.

She is like Bosco in many ways. She is sweet, loving, and spoiled….BUT! This sweet little mild-mannered kitty becomes mischievous come nightfall. THAT is subject for another post.

Hello friends.

I think winter is finally rearing its ugly head in Ohio. We have been enjoying unseasonably warm weather and sunshine. Now, it has been raining for three days and was sleeting a few moments ago. Time to post my Days Until Spring countdown. Alright...ALRIGHT! I’ll wait until after Christmas before looking toward Spring....if I must.

The house is as decorated as it is going to get. There’s just too much going on for me to go all out this year. I just need to store the boxes and clean up after myself. Hopefully, I can get that done before Christmas Day.

Did you go out shopping on Black Friday? I did for a bit. I prefer the midnight shift so I can get done and then go home to bed. I arrived at Kohl’s at 12:10 AM with my own shopping bag. They were still corralling people through the doors. It was fairly warm and everyone was courteous. No knives or pepper spray, thankfully.

I am a strategic shopper...no browsing for me. I know what I want before I leave the house and like a Stealth Fighter Pilot, I fly in-strike-and go. According to plan, I flew in and within 20 minutes had zig-zagged through the store and found the items on my list.

GREAT!

Time to get in line...

There’s the line...

No wait; there’s the line...but it’s going in a different direction. Where’s the end of the line??? After several minutes, I heard a Kohl’s associate yell the end of the line is right here. Droves of people clamoured toward her voice.

I’m in line! GREAT!

The line...that I was so happy to be in...wrapped around the entire store, TWICE! Needless to say this left lots of time for browsing. I guess browsing IS for me. I was good and only picked up one item that was not on my list, a remote controlled car for one of my nephews.

I stood in line for an hour and 40 minutes. I was thirsty, tired, and more than ready for bed when I got home just after 2:00AM. Everyone was snuggled in bed except for Jordan’s girlfriend, Ashlee. She was up and ready to out on the morning shopping shift with her aunt. Good night Ashlee. Have fun!

Pumpkin Bread and Butter

Hello Friends.

How was your Thanksgiving? Did you get your fill of turkey and stuffing, potatoes and gravy, pumpkin pie and whipped cream? Our family certainly did.

I have two recipes that I came across from Better Homes and Gardens. Both are delicious and go hand-in-hand like bread and butter...pumpkin bread and pumpkin butter that is.

The coffee is on and I still have some pumpkin bread and butter in the fridge so have a seat and share some with me.

Double Decker Pumpkin Bread

4 Ounces Cream Cheese

1/4 Cup Sugar

8 Ounces Sour Cream

1 Egg

2 Tablespoons Crystallized Ginger, finely chopped

3 Cups All-purpose Flour

2 Teaspoons Baking Soda

2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon

1 Teaspoon Ground Ginger

1 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg

1/2 Teaspoon Salt

4 Eggs

15 Ounce Can Pumpkin Puree

1 Cup Oil

1/3 Cup Water

Preheat oven to 350* F. Spray the bottom of 2 loaf pans (9"x5"x3") with cooking spray. (I line the bottom with parchment paper and then spray)

In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese and 1/4 cup sugar. Beat with electric mixer on medium speed until combined. Add sour cream and 1 egg; beat until combined. Stir in the crystallized ginger and set aside.

In another medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, and salt; set aside.

In a large bowl, combine the 2 cups of sugar, 4 eggs, pumpkin, oil, and water. Beat on low speed until combined, scraping the side of the bowl occasionally. Gradually add flour mixture, beating until combined.

Spoon 1-1/2 cups of pumpkin batter into each prepared loaf pan. Divide the cream cheese mixture between pans and spread evenly. Spoon the remaining pumpkin batter onto cream cheese layer, spreading evenly.

Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes. Remove bread from pans and cool completely on wire racks.

Wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Makes 32 servings.

What is bread without butter? No worries. Better Homes and Gardens also had a recipe for pumpkin butter. If you like apple butter, you will like this spicy butter. It is such a pretty color; perfect for your holiday table.

Spiced Pumpkin Butter
4 Cups Pumpkin Puree
1-1/4 Cups Maple Syrup
1/2 Cup Apple Juice
2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
2 Teaspoons Ground Ginger
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
1/4 Teaspoon Salt

In 5-quart Dutch Oven, combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat, stirring frequently,25 minutes or until thick. (If mixture splatters, lower heat to medium-low). Remove from heat and cool.

Ladle into jars or freezer containers, leaving 1/2 inch head-space. Cover and refrigerate up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

These recipes are so simple and very tasty. What a wonderful gift this pair would make for co-workers, teachers, neighbors....or yourself! ENJOY ~

Blueberry Cream Cheese Coffee Cake

Blueberries.....Cream Cheese.....Coffee Cake. I love all these things and the idea of marrying them all together sounds like a brilliant culinary idea.

Let's bake.

Blueberry Cream Cheese Coffee CakeBatter
1 1/2 Cups Granulated Sugar
1/2 Cup Butter, softened slightly
2 Eggs
2 Cups All-purpose Flour
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1 Teaspoon Salt
3/4 Cup Milk
1/4 Cup Water
2 Cups Fresh Blueberries
8 Ounces Cream Cheese, cubed

Topping
1/4 Cup Flour
2 Tablespoons Butter
1/4 Cup Sugar
Cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, and mix thoroughly after each egg.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk and water.

Toss blueberries in 1/4 cup flour. Fold cream cheese and blueberries into the batter. Pour into prepared 9x13 pan.

Combine topping ingredients and mix until it is crumbly. Sprinkle over batter. Bake in preheated 375* oven for 1 hour.

Hello Friends.

It has been a glorious weekend here in Ohio. Today the sun is shining, the skies are bright blue, and there is a crisp freshness to the air. It is an ideal fall weekend.

Last weekend, my dad turned 87! We gathered at my brother and sister-in-law's home for a potluck celebration of his birth. Dad enjoyed having all his children and grandchildren together in one spot.

The joke in our family is how Dad fixes EVERYTHING with Duck brand duct tape. Do you have someone like that in your family? Are YOU that person in your family? I digress... At Jordan's urging, I ordered Dad a special individual birthday cake to resemble a roll of duct tape. He got a kick out that.

After dinner, we all stuck around to watch the Ohio State football game. It was an exciting game and Ohio State pulled out the victory with only seconds left in the game. That was the "icing" on Dad's birthday cake.

Life is a Whirlwind

Hello friends.

Yes, I am alive and kicking. It has been a very hectic and stressful fall here. There have been fun times with birthdays, festivals, and football.

Unfortunately, there have also been many health issues. In the past couple of months:

Niece-in-law - shoulder surgery
Brother #3 - shoulder surgery
Nephew #2 - knee surgery
Nephew #1 - shoulder surgery
Great Nephew (age 4) - broken arm
Brother #3's girlfriend's son - broken foot
Sister-in-law - hospitalized with chest pains

Although I am not responsible for the day-to-day care of these loved ones, I don't worry any less and their illnesses have been a distraction. I am happy to report they are all healing nicely.

The one person to whom I am responsible for day-to-day care is my father. He too has had some health issues lately. At 87, I suppose that is to be expected. In recent months, he has undergone eye surgery, his kidneys have been in distress, and he has some much needed back surgery coming up. I was not thrilled about the idea of surgery, but the problem is diminishing his quality of life.

As if this weren't enough, our family sustained quite a scare two weeks ago when my youngest nephew (age 8), who is wiry, funny, and energetic had a seizure. He was so brave as they poked and prodded him at the emergency room. Thankfully, they quickly ruled out a tumor and referred him to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. He has undergone tests and early indications are that this ailment can be treated with medication. We are very thankful.

Speaking of thankful, don’t you just love your blogging buddies? They are the most encouraging, thoughtful, and generous people.

Lynn always has an encouraging word to share with me when I am feeling vulnerable. She has become a real pal in the past year. While I was away from blogging, I received this wonderful care package this special buddy and her sidekick, Earl.

She sent me a jar of her homemade jalapeno relish. Look at how sweetly she decorated this jar. Does that not say Hi, I’m Happier than a Pig in Mud?!

Oh my, is it DELICIOUS!! To my family…you won’t like it so don’t even try it. ;o) I’ve tried it on hot dogs and in tartar sauce and it is amazing. I may try it in my potato salad next time, if there is any left.

Oh, and there is this sweet little sachet. It smells heavenly.

Ohio Renaissance Festival

Greetings Lords and Ladies.

Recently, Jordan, Ashlee, and I ventured into Southern Ohio for the Ohio Renaissance Festival. Jordan and I wanted to go to this festival for years, but something always got in the way.

This year we planned ahead and made it happen. We got up early in the morning and drove the two hours to Harveysburg, Ohio, which sets four miles (and four centuries) west of I-71.

As we got out of the car, we saw many people dressed in Renaissance Period garb. These were not people dressed up for a Halloween or masquerade party, these people are lovers of history and assume a new persona.

We were there just prior to the opening and people were gathered outside the Castle's gate. Standing above the grated gates, the queen greeted her people.

What lay before us inside the gate was much more than I anticipated.See for yourself...

Jordan decided he wanted to join in on the fun so we stopped in at Swan Lace to get him transformed. There was so much to choose from and as Jordan was trying things on, Ashlee and I oohed and aahed over the pretty dresses and corsets.

Check out my handsome bard. Jordan, who is shy by nature was being coached on how to pose by this interesting gentleman.

The day we went, the festival was celebrating Romance Weekend. While we were eating our lunch, a flower vendor came by and asked Jordan if he wanted to buy his lady a flower. She chose a beautiful rose.

The festival offers many of the usual fair foods of chicken strips, fries, and pretzels. However, we opted for the specialties. Jordan and I enjoyed bread bowls filled with beef stew for Jordan and Ceasar Salad for me. Then Jordan and Ashlee had THE festival specialty, smoked turkey legs.

The festival boasts 11 stages with continuous entertainment. We enjoyed several shows, but still left a lot unseen.

We had a lot of fun and look forward to returning next year. We are already making plans for OUR clothes. If your area hosts a renaissance festival, we highly recommend you check it out. It is unlike any other festival you've attended.

Blast from the Past: 80s Hair

A couple weeks back we looked at celebrity inspired hair styles. Today, grab your pick, teasing comb, and Aqua Net ‘cause we’re looking back at the BIG hairstyles of the 80s. Frankly, I’m not sure WHAT inspired these disasters creations, but they were all the rage.

Jheri Curl – The Jheri Curl was worn by African Americans in the 70s and 80s, so its trend lasted quite a while. It gave the wearer a glossy, loosely curled look. Copious amounts of moisturizer and curl activator was needed daily to maintain this look.

Perms (Curly) – Along the same vein, curly perms were all the rage during the 80s and worn by men and women alike. The poodle-like style created volume for those with thin hair and helped disguise cow-licks. I know this because all three of my brothers and I sported this easy-care do. Please don’t hate me. It could be worse…

Mullets – Like most trends, this gem of a haircut garners quite a bit of ridicule since it fell from grace. Although it is comedian fodder now (Joe Dirt), it was all the rage and many celebrities sported a mullet, including Paul McCartney, David Bowie, and Bono.

It is a style of extremes: very short and spiky on the top and sides and worn long in the back. It is so funny because there is a boy on Joel’s football team that sports a mullet…I think as a joke….at least I hope so!

Rat-tails – As if the mullet isn’t bad enough on its own, in the 80s it was many times accompanied by a Rat-tail. The rat-tail usually curls naturally; however, it can also be braided, curled with a curling iron, or treated and worn as a dread, permed, or straightened.

Flock of Seagulls Hairstyle – I don’t get it. Never have…never will.

Happy Fall!

What's not to love about autumn?

It is my favorite time of year, and is Ohio's best season. The crisp fresh air with low humidity and cool breezes.

The trees are already turning here in Central Ohio. Before long, they will falling in the breeze onto the ground where they will crunch...crunch...crunch under foot. I love that sound.

We went to the orchard yesterday for the annual Apple Festival. Does anything smell better than an apple orchard in the fall. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I remember every fall going to the orchard with Mom. We would buy apples, caramels, parched corn, and cider.

You all know how much I love my football. I follow football at all levels with high school being my favorite. I love the school spirit shown by the players, band, cheerleaders, and fans. I've been watching my nephews and Jordan play football for nearly 20 years. Boy, that makes me feel old.

Fall holidays are fun, festive, and food driven. Halloween is so much fun. I love handing out candy to all the little ghosts, goblins, lions, and princesses. I even enjoy giving treats to the teenagers who come around with a pillow case. Of course, I can't forget the four-legged tricksters. They get treats, too.

Last year, I had a bowl of dog treats to hand out and a certain black furry Court Jester, pictured in my banner, kept sneaking treats. He was very slick about it too. I wouldn't notice until I'd hear him chomping on it.

After Halloween, we gear up for the feast of the year, Thanksgiving. I am still a kid at heart and can't imagine not plopping my backside in front of the TV for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and the official arrival of SANTA CLAUS!!!

Oh my, talk about food coma...after the parade, the onslaught of power-eating ensues with turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberries, sweet potatoes, and baked goods. The gluttonous eating is justified though, because you have to have plenty of energy for the Black Friday sales that begin just hours after your THIRD dessert.

I think I will throw on some sweats and start planning my eating strategy....

Blast from the Past: Drive-in Theater

Hello Friends.

I have to tell you, the comments left on the Blast from the Past posts are my very favorite to read. You all share such wonderful memories and humorous quips. I look forward to it every week.

Last week, we talked about gas prices UNDER A DOLLAR A GALLON. Now THOSE were the good ol’ days. Many of you mentioned there aren’t any drive-ins left in your area. Let me tell you….come to Central Ohio where they still exist.

Drive-ins are still the best cinema bargain around. They still offer double features for one low price. There are, however, some changes.

Remember when you would pull up to a post with a detachable speaker. As a young driver, I always seemed to have problems lining up my dad’s car correctly. Ergo, there was always the back-up, pull forward, back-up, pull forward, back-up, pull forward dance to park just right. Then I would need to stretch out the window to grab the speaker and attach it to my window. Half the time the sound was so bad all you could here was static.

These days, you listen to the dialogue on your radio. How cool is that?

When Jordan was younger, we would drive to the drive-in in Kenton, which is about 20 miles away. We would stop and get a pizza and drinks on the way. It was an economical evening of fun. Now, that same drive-in charges you extra for bringing in your own food.

Jordan and Ashlee go to the drive-in from time-to-time. There are four drive-in theaters within an hour’s drive so they have a good choice of movies. As for me, it has been probably 5-6 years since I went to the drive-in. I can’t seem to stay awake that late anymore…

It’s official. I am a woman of a certain age. You know you are a person of a certain age when you start sentences with I remember when…

When I first had my license, a couple years ago…ahem, a gallon of gas was less than a dollar. To be exact, it cost me $.62 per gallon of gas. Whenever I borrowed Dad’s car, I had to put gas in it…so off to the service station I would go to have $1.00 worth of gas (1.62 gallons) pumped into the car before picking up my friends to go to the drive-in for a double-feature.

Times, they sure have changed. That same dollar would get me just over ¼ of a gallon of gas…that is 1 quart…or 2 pints…or 4 cups. No matter how you phrase it, it isn’t much gas. I doubt it would get me to the nearest drive-in theater now.

First Responders

Hello Friends.

I hope you each had a spectacular weekend. My weekend was filled to the brim with football games, the Marion Popcorn Festival, and remembering the events of 9/11/01.

Last night as I watched one of the many specials, I saw hundreds of firefighters marching toward the one remaining tower and I wondered what was going through the minds of these brave men and women. Certainly, it must have run through their minds that this may be the fire they don’t survive. Still, they marched forward without a discernible instance of hesitancy.

While the heroism the first responders exhibited on 9/11 is irrefutable, the truth is there are first responders throughout the world who put their lives on the line for the safety and protection of the public daily.

Friday, during my lunch hour, I visited First Responders Park in Hilliard, Ohio. My purpose for going was to take pictures to share with you on 9/11. I was not quite prepared for the emotional impact of this visit.

The park is dedicated to the first responders nationwide who sacrifice their personal safety to protect our citizens. Although the memorial is in Hilliard, Ohio, it carries the message that no matter where you live, all Americans are stakeholders in the events of 9/11.

The focal point of the park is a unique sculpture by Ohio artist, Dale Johnson. A new element will be added to the sculpture each year, making it an ever evolving piece. The sculpture is made of individual cast and fabricated stainless steel figures, which were then welded together.

When you first look at the piece, you see that it represents the flames of the inferno which enveloped the towers. Upon further inspection, you see the individual figures represent the people who perished in the flames.

This amazing sculpture sets atop a platform, surrounded by a reflecting pool. Fire hoses, 9 on one side and 11 on the other spray water into the pool.

Three granite walls, each representing the three places where planes crashed are engraved with the names of the victims who died on 9/11.

The sculpture below is made of fiberglass and represents the image of the tower remnants that remained standing.

I visited the World Trade Center and ate at Windows on the World when I was a senior in high school. A month before the attacks, Jordan and I drove through New York as we drove home from Cape Cod. I pointed out the buildings in the skyline and promised Jordan we would come back in the spring and we would tour some of them.

See those two really tall buildings?

Those are the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Therefore, the most powerful aspects of the park, for me, are the six tons of steel from the World Trade Center towers that are incorporated into the memorial.

Part of a support beam from Ground Zero sets alone. No plaque with eloquent words. After all, what could be said?

These railings are from the subway tunnel that ran under the towers. I wonder if I ran my hand down this railing on my visit to the World Trade Center all those years ago…

If you know me personally, you know that I am fascinated by all things that fly. I may be in the midst of a conversation, but will stop and look up if a plane or helicopter flies overhead….usually dreaming about being on board and flying off to somewhere exotic.

Friday as I approached this part of the park, an airliner flew overhead. Honestly, it could not have been timed more appropriately. I was chilled by the sound of the planes engines while my eyes took in the sight of this twisted metal. I was drawn to touch the metal as I looked at it and I wondered what it must have been like for the rescue workers to look for survivors and deceased in endless piles of twisted metal. What kind of psychological impact did this have on their lives?

Thank you to all the first responders who work daily to make our lives safer.

Ten years?

How could it possibly be10 years since the murderous attacks on innocent people (civilians)? It seems like just yesterday.

With the passing of time, fears have calmed and grief has faded, but our vigilance and resolve remain strong as ever. Never again will Americans be lulled into believing the immoral activities of those with hardened hearts and evil souls who hate freedom and democracy cannot impact our lives.

Today, let’s not waste our time thinking about thugs. Instead, let’s…

Remember the brave first responders who rushed into the doomed towers of the World Trade Center. More than 400 first responders died trying to save those trapped in the towers and surrounding buildings.

Remember the heroic actions of the passengers on Flight 93, who fought back and foiled a second planned attack on Washington DC with its likely target being either the Capitol or the White House.

Let’s Roll!

Remember the lost lives of the innocent men, women, and children murdered in terrorist attacks on New York, Washington, and Shanksville.

Remember the victims who died as a result of exposure to dust during the collapse of the World Trade Center and those who suffer from disease as a direct result of this exposure.

Remember more than 90 countries lost compatriots as a result of the attacks on 9/11/2001.

Remember US senators and representatives from both sides of the aisle uniting on the Capitol steps to sing God Bless America.

Remember President Bush’s bullhorn speech at Ground Zero.

I can hear you! I can hear you!

The rest of the world hears you!

And the people -- and the people

who knocked these buildings

down will hear all of us soon!

Remember the rescue crews who came from all parts of the US and world to search for survivors and to recover the deceased.

Remember the 300 rescue dogs who worked tirelessly.

Remember the increased number of households who proudly flew the Stars and Stripes. Are you still flying your flag regularly? We proudly fly ours year round.

Remember the tearful condolences offered by our friends from every corner of the world.

Remember the survivors and loved ones whose lives have forever been changed.

End of Summer Celebration

Hello Friends!

Did you enjoy a spectacular summer this year? It has certainly been a summer of extremes:hot and humid in the east, rainy across the country's midsection, hot and arid in the southwest. The iffy weather didn't hamper our enthusiasm for the season though.

I spent my summer (and spring) doing lots of fun things.

I spent time at the beach...

Set a patriotic tablescape...

and tried new recipes.

I tried to grow a vegetable garden, which was a disaster, but planted flowers that thankfully flourished....

And enjoyed a Victorian tea with Makayla.

All in all it's been a wonderful summer and it seems too soon for it to end. BUT, the end of summer brings my favorite season, fall.

Hello Friends!

Remember when foods were entertaining and fun as well as delicious?

SHAKE A PUDDIN’: Royal offered this activity/treat in the 70’s. Just put the powder in the shaker cup, add milk, shake, and in minutes you would have a creamy treat in vanilla, chocolate or banana.

Mmmm, Mmmm, Mmmm.

JIFFY POP POPCORN: This product is more fun to make than it is to eat. Its inception goes back to 1958…before I was even born. I can’t say that about many things anymore. Oh the fun of watching the foil cap expand to a big dome full of salty popcorn. I still buy Jiffy Pop Popcorn from time to time just for the fun factor.

ZOTZ: I recently saw Zots at a local candy store. The hard candy with the fizzy sour center must still be popular.

POP ROCKS: Pop Rocks is perhaps the most fun of all candies. General Foods scientist William Mitchell developed this product in 1956, but it wasn’t introduced to the public until 1975. It became an instant success, which is enjoyed still today.

These amazing little gems are tiny air pockets of carbonation (CO2) that are released when melted in your mouth making a mild "crackling" sensation and "popping" noise. Of course you HAVE to open your mouth so the noise gets louder. The original flavors were Orange, Cherry and Grape. A few years back, I found chocolate covered Pop Rocks that were meant to be used as an ice cream topping. How fun is that?

Do you remember the urban legend that if you ate Pop Rocks while drinking Coke, your stomach would explode causing immediate death?

CRACKER JACKS: Carmel coated popcorn and peanuts in the familiar red, white, and blue box with a sailor on the front and a prize inside. I remember my Grandpa Benson bringing us Cracker Jacks when he would visit. Back in the 60s and 70s, the prizes were actual little toys (now collectors’ fodder). Alas, today’s boxes contain stickers or temporary tattoos.

Suddenly, I’m hungry. I’m off to the store now. Remember, sometimes it is alright to play with your food.

Fall is in the Air

You can feel a change in the air here in Ohio. The breezes are cooler and the temperatures lower.

It's time for football,

tailgating, and

before long, apple picking.

Friday was the first game of my nephew Joel's (#2) senior season playing varsity football.

Joel's scrimmage number is 4

We were thrilled to hear mid-week that he was chosen a team captain. He and another captain decided to cut their hair especially for the game.

Most of the family turned out for Friday's game as did of Columbus' local news stations.

It was a fun game and Joel's team, the underdog, won the game 34-21.

On my last trip to Fort Pierce, my cousin's daughter, Morgan, graciously gave up her room for me. THANKS MORGAN! She has a great room with stuffed giraffes, a memo board full of pictures with her BFF, and posters of Taylor Lautner plastered on the walls. Oh how that brought me back to my teen days when I too had heartthrobs plastered on my walls....

David Cassidy, AKA Keith Partridge from the hit 70's show, The Partridge Family. Was there a girl alive in the 70s that wasn't in love with Keith Partridge? When he sang I think I love you, I was SURE he was singing to ME!

Although David Cassidy has worked steadily, he has never enjoyed the success of his earlier years. At 61, he has been married three times and has two children.

Look into those sparkling blue eyes and tell me you don't melt. Wasn't Bobby Sherman, AKA Jeremy Bolt from the TV show Here Come the Brides, yummy?

Now, Bobby is 68 and the grandfather of 5. In later years, he worked as a deputy sheriff in San Bernadino, California.

Squad 51 to Rampart....Randolph Mantooth, AKA Johnny Gage, could save me any day. Talk about your hot firefighters! Randolph Mantooth starred on Emergency! in the 70s. His character was a wise cracking, charming, and brave paramedic.

Since his days on the hit show, he has acted in The Seekers and several soap operas. He is 65, married, and is the honorary chairman and spokesmen for the County of Los Angeles Fire Museum Association.

Let's see how well these hotties held up over the years...

Celebrity Cook Along: Rachael Ray

If you know me well, you know I am a huge Rachael Ray fan. I use her cookware, Bubble and Brown Casseroles, knives and other kitchen accessories. I have several of her cookbooks and have only made one recipe from them that I didn't think was fabulous.

As you can imagine, I was thrilled when Lynn announced Rachael would be the August celebrity chef. Woo-hoo! In the past months, we celebrated Ina Garten, Bobby Flay, Ree Drummond, Paula Deen, and the Pillsbury Doughboy.

The tough part about this month's challenge was choosing just one recipe to share. After careful consideration, I chose Tandoori Chicken. This chicken dish is packed with flavor. I like to slice it thinly and serve it on warm Naan with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and Tzatziki Sauce.

Let's cook!

Tandoori Chicken
1 Cup Greek Yogurt - regular plain yogurt works fine
2 Inches Grated Ginger Root
3 Cloves Grated Garlic
1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
2 Teaspoons Coriander
1 Teaspoon Smoked Paprika - I used 1/4 t. paprika + 1/4 t. cumin
1/2 Teaspoon Tumeric
1 Teaspoon Cardamom
1 Teaspoon Cumin
3 Tablespoons Olive Oil, plus extra for drizzling
4 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs
3 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts - I used 4 breasts and no thighs
Salt and Pepper

Preheat oven to 500 to 550 degrees F, as high as it goes. Cover a baking sheet with foil and set a baking rack on top if you have one.

Place yogurt in shallow dish and combine with ginger, grated garlic, chili powder, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cardamom, cumin and 2 tablespoons oil. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and coat in sauce. Arrange on baking sheet and roast 20 to 25 minutes until juices run clear.

You may also cook the chicken on the grill.

Hello Friends!

Did you have a fantastic weekend? I hope you were able to beat the heat with some fun and relaxation.

Some of you know my dad hasn't been feeling up to par lately. We've made several trips to the ER and doctors appointments lately. Understandably, these struggles coupled with the excessive heat, have left him home-bound and feeling pretty blue.

Yesterday, I packed him up and we went for a drive along Ohio's north shore, Lake Erie. When I was a teenager, my parents had a house trailer just south of Port Clinton on the Portage River. My dad loved it up there and we spent every weekend and five weeks of vacation there each summer.

It rained most of the trip up and back, but it was nice while we were there. It was hot and humid, but the overcast skies kept the sun from beating down on us. There was a breeze, which there almost always is near the lake.

WE started with a drive around Nugent's Canal, where we spent summers and boy has it changed. Where there used to be empty lots along the canal, are year 'round homes, and summer cottages. All the old boat docks have been replaced and most of them have boats tied up to them.

For anyone who has ever visited, the old bouncy bridge over the canal no longer exists and The Point now has grass, a wooden ship for kids to play on and a decorative lighthouse. Where the old facilities were now stands a community shelter with picnic tables. The old restaurant/bar/bait shop is still open and is now called the Lagoon Saloon. It now has outdoor seating. Next trip we will definitely stop in for a drink and dinner.

After this trip down memory lane, we moved along the shore to Port Clinton and Marblehead. Our destination was the Marblehead Lighthouse so I could take some pictures for all of you.

If you are a lover of lighthouses, you undoubtedly are familiar with the Marblehead Lighthouse as it is a famous jewel of Lake Erie. Its location is ideal for views of Lake Erie, Sandusky Bay, Kelleys Island and South Bass Island. Yesterday, we weren't able to see the islands due to the hazy and overcast weather.

By the time I finished taking photos of the lighthouse, Dad was hungry. A good sign. We headed back to Port Clinton to Jolly Roger Seafood House for perch. I was raised on perch as my Grandpa Benson was an excellent fisherman. It is still my favorite fish.

Named one of the best seafood dives by Coastal Living Magazine, Jolly Roger specializes in Lake Erie Perch and Walleye. They also serve chicken, turkey, and other fish and seafood, but we were there for PERCH! YUM!

We had a wonderful day at the north shore, and Dad's spirits seem to be lifted. Since he was such a good boy during our trip, I made him a big ice cream cone when we got home.

Dessert Bruschetta with Nectarine Salsa

Hello Friends.

Today I am sharing another recipe from Taste of Home, Dessert Bruschetta with Nectarine Salsa. This is an ideal dessert to enjoy on a hot August evening.

Dessert Bruschetta with Nectarine Salsa

1 medium nectarine, chopped

1/4 cup fresh or frozen raspberries, thawed

1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves, thinly sliced

2 slices pound cake

3 tablespoons Mascarpone cheese

2 teaspoons honey

Whipped cream, optional

In a small bowl, combine the nectarine, raspberries and mint. Let stand for 5 minutes.

Spread cake slices with cheese; top with nectarine mixture. Drizzle with honey. Serve with whipped cream if desired. Yield: 2 servings.

Blast from the Past: Mrs. Beasley

Hello Friends.

Is your week off to a great start? Monday evening brought strong storms to Central Ohio. I drove through quite an intense one during my drive home. I felt like I was in the movie Twister as the wind blew my car a bit.

It is Tuesday, which means it is time for a Blast from the Past. Woo-hoo! I realize that for some of you, the Blast from the Past series is more like Before I was Born...but bear with me.

When I was a little girl in the 60s, I watched Family Affair. It starred Brian Keith as a successful bachelor, Bill Davis, who inherits his deceased brother's children: Jody, Buffy, and Cissie. The family was cared after by Uncle Bill's butler, Mr. French.

Six year-old Buffy's favorite toy was her special doll, Mrs. Beasley. Mrs. Beasley was a gift to Buffy from her late parents and served as her security blanket. She would tell Mrs. Beasley her secrets and about things that worried her.

In 1967, Matel produced a 22 inch talking Mrs. Beasley doll. For you youngsters, she was the Cabbage Patch of her day. She had blonde hair, sported wire rim glasses, and wore a blue and white polka dot dress.

Mrs. Beasley spoke 10 phrases.

I'm sure you guessed that I had a Mrs. Beasley doll when I was a little girl. I loved her very much and she listened to my secrets and worries, too.

Alas, my inquisitive uncle decided he HAD to know how Mrs. Beasley talked and he performed an autopsy on her. I think he was the inspiration for Toy Story's Sid. My poor Mrs. Beasley was never heard from again. Her memory, however, lives in my heart.

Hello Friends.

Today is the first of the 31 days of August. In our area, we see the hottest temperatures during August. By the end of the month, the kids will be back in school, the pools will be closing, and football season will be upon us.

It is during August that we try to squeeze in those last picnics, garage sales, and trips to the beach and amusement parks. As we savor the last days of summer 2011 before welcoming autumn to the region, let's celebrate with a link party.

Before we know it, Labor Day will be upon us and we will bid summer adieu. Let's finish up the summer right with a big bash.

Pulling weeds for about five minutes

the other night left me looking like I ran a marathon.

I was so happy when I received an email from

Taste of Home that included a recipe for a

strawberry spritzer. It is just what we

needed to help us cool our bodies.

STRAWBERRY SPRITZER

1 10-oz. package frozen sweetened sliced strawberries, thawed

2 liters lemon-lime soda, like 7up or Sprite

1 can pink lemonade concentrate, thawed

Place strawberries in blender; process until pureed.

Pour into large pitcher and stir in soda and

lemonade concentrate. Serve immediately.

Blast from the Past: Harry Potter

Jordan is a huge Harry Potter fan. I credit J K Rowling with developing Jordan's love for reading. Therefore, we always celebrate the premiere of the latest movie and have a standing date to see it the first weekend.

Today, we're only going to go back to 2001 to the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Look how young Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint appear in this first movie. Aren't they adorable?

These young actors have entertained us for 10 years with their adventures at Hogwarts, their battles against he who shall not be named, and their growing pains. It was bittersweet last weekend when we viewed the last film of this magical series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

These brilliant actors have grown from young children into responsible adults. I feel as though they are a part of our family. Whatever the future brings for them, I am confident they will be successful.

Horrible Bosses and a Drink for Sally

Hello Friends.

I hope you had a fun weekend and didn't swelter in the 2011 heat wave that seems to have a grip on most of the country.

Ashlee and I had a girls night out on Saturday. We went to see Horrible Bosses in Columbus. This star-studded romp was so fun and was just what I needed to decompress from a hectic week.

The movie follows three friends (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day) who work for the worst of the worst of bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Aniston). Their solution? They would each kill the other one's boss. As you can imagine....that is easier said than done.

We enjoyed the movie very much, but if you are easily offended you may want to pass on the R-rated movie. Actors also appearing in this movie are Bob Newhart, Donald Sutherland. Julie Bowen, and Jamie Foxx.

Before the movie, Ashlee and I stopped into Keystone Pub for a drink. I had an Electric Lemonade in honor of Sally, who is still recuperating from her surgery. I think she would love this color of blue, don't you?

Ice Cream Social Wrap Up and Winners

Hello Friends.

Thank you so much for joining me for my first link party. Ice cream seems to be a favorite no matter where you are from. It was so fun to meet new friends and to visit those I've known for a while. (Like how I skirted around using the word old?)

Wasn't it interesting to visit Spain, France, the UK, Australia, and different areas of North America to see how our neighbors in those locals enjoy this sweet, creamy, and cold delicacy?

I enjoyed reading about the Fish Man and Phil, the ice cream man, didn't you? Some of you made ice cream using very unique ingredients: daylily ice cream, candied bacon ice cream, Horchata which is made using tubers of the Cyperus esculentus. Who knew??

There are so many fantastic recipes I don't know where to begin. I hope you try at least a couple of these wonderful desserts.

Look! I won Cindy's Ice Cream Social tag. Isn't it adorable? I love it!
